桜は、都が京にあった古い時代から、その美しさを和歌に詠むなど日本にとって関わりが深く、親しまれている花木です。
桜を大きく分類すると山桜を代表とする「野生種」と観賞用に改良された「園芸種」（里桜）になります。
花は染井吉野を代表とする「一重」と八重桜の総称で呼ばれる「八重」に大きく分類されます。
枝のつきぶりや樹高、開花時期、花のつき方、大きさなどその種類は多岐に亘ります。
